Brazil Draws 1-1 with Morocco in World Cup Opener
In a Group C opener at New York New Jersey Stadium, Brazil and Morocco played to a 1-1 draw, marking the beginning of the five-time World Cup winners’ uncertain journey in the 2026 tournament. The match saw Ismael Saibari score for Morocco in the 21st minute with a clever scoop, while Vinicius Junior equalized for Brazil 11 minutes later.
The game featured several notable performances from both teams. Morocco’s Brahim Diaz provided a fine pass to set up Saibari’s goal, and Neil El Aynaoui and Achraf Hakimi threatened the Brazilian goal before halftime. However, Brazil drew level through Vinicius Junior, who received the ball from Bruno Guimaraes and scored with a powerful shot past Yassine Bounou.
Brazil’s goalkeeper Alisson Becker made several key saves throughout the match, including one to deny Lucas Paqueta an acrobatic effort before halftime. The Selecao also had opportunities to score in the second half, but Morocco’s goalkeeper Bounou kept Brazil at bay. The draw marked a mixed performance from Brazil, who are chasing a record sixth World Cup title.
The team is led by coach Carlo Ancelotti, who has taken over with the aim of ending Brazil’s 24-year title drought. Despite a fifth-placed finish in South American qualifying, Ancelotti remains confident in his squad’s ability to compete. Morocco will face Scotland in their next match, while Brazil will take on Haiti.
