Scotland Secures First World Cup Win Since 1990 with 1-0 Victory Over Haiti
A scrappy finish by John McGinn allowed Scotland to secure a 1-0 win over Haiti at the Gillette Stadium in Boston, marking their return to the World Cup after a 28-year absence. The match, which was attended by a majority of Scottish fans, saw Aston Villa captain McGinn score with the aid of a deflection just before the half-hour mark.
Scotland’s victory puts them top of Group C and marks their first win at a World Cup since a 2-1 defeat of Sweden in Italy in 1990. The team, led by Steve Clarke, is bidding to make history by reaching the knockout stages for the first time in the tournament’s history.
Haiti, one of the lowest-ranked teams in the tournament, had a strong lineup featuring midfielder Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and striker Wilson Isidor, both of whom played regularly in the English Premier League this season. However, Scotland’s depth was evident with players such as McGinn, skipper Andy Robertson, and Scott McTominay.
The match was a nervy one for Scotland, who had to hang on grimly at the end. Despite being forced back by Haiti in the closing stages, they were able to secure the win and move closer to reaching the knockout stages. They will face Morocco at the same stadium in their next game before heading to Miami to take on Brazil.
Scotland’s achievement is all the more impressive given the turmoil in Haiti, which prevented the team from playing qualifiers at home. The country’s lineup included several players who have featured regularly in the English Premier League this season.
