UK Authorities Launch Fresh Investigation into Social Media Platform Grok Following French Raid
The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched a fresh investigation into social media platform Grok, following a simultaneous raid on X’s offices in France. The CMA is reportedly examining allegations of anticompetitive practices and unfair business practices by the platforms. Grok’s parent company, X Corporation, has been facing intense scrutiny from French authorities over its acquisition of several rival social media platforms. The French competition authority had already launched a preliminary investigation into the deal, which was valued at €400 million. The raid on X’s offices in France is believed to be a joint operation between French and UK authorities. The CMA has confirmed that it is working closely with its French counterparts to investigate potential breaches of EU antitrust law. As part of the investigation, the CMA will examine allegations that Grok engaged in exclusive agreements with certain content creators, which may have limited competition on the platform. It will also review X’s business practices and assess whether they are compliant with UK and EU regulations. X has not commented directly on the investigation, but a spokesperson for the company stated that it welcomes the opportunity to engage with regulators and cooperate with their investigations. The company has repeatedly maintained that its acquisition of rival platforms was done in good faith and to promote competition and innovation. The CMA’s investigation into Grok is expected to be one of the most high-profile cases to come out of the UK’s social media sector in recent years, highlighting the growing scrutiny faced by large tech companies over their business practices.
