Tesla Unveils Unsupervised Robotaxi Rides
Tesla has begun offering unsupervised robotaxi rides in Austin, Texas, marking a significant milestone for the company’s autonomous vehicle technology. For months, Tesla’s robotaxis in both Austin and San Francisco have been paired with safety monitors who can access a kill switch if an emergency arises. This fallback system is currently utilized by Waymo in its commercial robotaxi service, but not by Tesla until now. The safety monitors are situated in the passenger seat in Austin and the driver seat in San Francisco. Despite this precautionary measure, the company’s robotaxis are still not fully open to the public and rely on customer waitlists for access. Elon Musk has emphasized that the human monitors were added as an additional layer of security before Tesla would consider removing them entirely.
