Screen Time and Young Children Spark Concern Among Parents
Research suggests that excessive screen time can have detrimental effects on young children’s cognitive, social, and emotional development. Studies have shown that children who spend more than two hours per day on screens are more likely to experience delays in speech development, attention problems, and decreased physical activity levels. A recent study published in the Journal of Pediatrics found that preschoolers who spent more time watching screens were less likely to engage in imaginative play, and their language skills were not as advanced as those of their peers who spent less time on screens. Moreover, excessive screen time has been linked to an increased risk of obesity, sleep problems, and decreased attention span. Educational apps and interactive programs can be beneficial when used in moderation and as part of a balanced daily routine. Parents should aim to limit their child’s screen time and encourage physical activity, social interaction, and cognitive development through engaging in activities such as reading, puzzles, and outdoor play.
