New Space Laser Technology Ready for Testing
Star Catcher, a private aerospace company, has successfully completed its first round of testing on an experimental laser-based energy transmission system designed to beam power from one spacecraft to another. The technology, if successful in its upcoming tests, would mark the first time that energy has been transmitted wirelessly between two separate vehicles operating in space. The laser-based system uses a process called “optical communication” to transmit data and energy over vast distances without the need for physical cables or wires. It works by creating a high-powered laser beam that is modulated with information, such as power levels, and then sent through space to a receiver spacecraft. In its upcoming tests, Star Catcher plans to launch two spacecraft – one will serve as the transmitter, while the other will receive the energy beam. The goal of the experiment is to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology for future deep space missions, where traditional means of powering and communicating with spacecraft may not be feasible or practical. If successful, this technology could revolutionize the way we explore and operate in space by enabling more efficient and flexible power transmission between vehicles, as well as potentially providing a new means of energy generation for remote or hard-to-reach locations in space.
