Meta Unveils Major Restructuring Effort Amid Shift in Priorities
Meta is set to significantly scale back its workforce as part of a broader effort to rebalance resources towards emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and cloud computing. The company’s plans, reportedly driven by the need to offset substantial investments in these areas, could result in the elimination of up to 20 percent of its staff. This would translate to approximately 15,800 positions, marking the largest series of layoffs at Meta since a previous round in early 2023. Following a reevaluation of its priorities, Meta has seemingly abandoned its efforts to develop and promote virtual reality (VR) technology and the concept of the Metaverse. The company’s recent moves have included significant budget reductions for these initiatives, as well as the closure of several studios. Instead, Meta has been actively seeking to expand its presence in the rapidly growing field of artificial intelligence, while also investing heavily in data center construction to support this growth.
