Instagram to Discontinue End-to-End Encrypted DMs as Most Users Do Not Use Feature
Instagram is set to stop supporting end-to-end encrypted direct messages on its platform, a move that comes after few users took advantage of the feature. In a statement, Meta confirmed the discontinuation, citing low usage rates among users who utilized this encryption method in their private conversations. The decision to phase out the feature is attributed to the fact that “very few people” were actively utilizing end-to-end encrypted messages, prompting the company to prioritize its features based on user demand. Users are advised to download any sensitive chats and images before May 8th, when the feature will officially be discontinued, as an alternative option remains available through WhatsApp, according to Meta spokesperson Dina El-Kassaby Luce.
