Grammarly Expert Sues Over Identity Theft
Journalist Julia Angwin has filed a class-action lawsuit against Grammarly, alleging that the company’s “Expert Review” AI feature uses real people’s identities without their permission. The complaint claims that Grammarly violated its users’ privacy and publicity rights by using their likenesses for commercial purposes in violation of laws prohibiting identity theft. Angwin, who is one of the journalists used by the company, discovered her own likeness being used through a colleague, Casey Newton, whose name was also associated with other experts previously reported to be used by Grammarly without consent.
