Belkin to Discontinue Support for Wemo Smart Devices on January 31st
As Belkin prepares to shut down its cloud services, nearly all of its Wemo smart home devices will no longer be able to access remote features and integrations with popular virtual assistants like Google Home and Alexa, starting January 31st. The company has announced that it will also cease app updates for the Wemo app on this date. The discontinuation affects most Wemo devices, including smart plugs, coffee makers, and other smart home devices, except for a limited selection of Thread-based devices. The decision was first made public in July, and the impact will be felt across Belkin’s product lineup. However, users of certain Thread-based devices, such as the 3-way smart light switch, stage smart scene controller, smart plug with Thread, and smart video doorbell camera, will continue to receive updates and support. Devices configured through Apple’s HomeKit will also remain functional. The shutdown marks the end of an era for Belkin’s Wemo brand, which was once a popular choice for smart home enthusiasts. As users look to alternative solutions, they may need to explore other options to manage their smart devices.
