Amazon Invests in Copper Harvested by Bacteria for Cloud Infrastructure
The tech giant has partnered with Nuton Technologies to integrate copper extracted from low-grade ores using microorganisms into its data centers, marking a significant shift towards more sustainable mining practices. As part of the partnership, Amazon Web Services will provide cloud-based data and analytics support to optimize the bioleaching process developed by Nuton. This novel approach leverages naturally-occurring microorganisms to extract copper from low-grade ores that would otherwise be too expensive to mine. By adopting this innovative technology, Amazon aims to reduce its environmental footprint while minimizing costs associated with traditional mining methods. The company’s data centers will utilize the copper harvested through bioleaching, which not only reduces water consumption but also lower carbon emissions compared to conventional extraction methods.
