West Indies Defeat England by 30 Runs at Wankhede Stadium
In a T20 World Cup Group C match, West Indies defeated England by 30 runs at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Wednesday. Sherfane Rutherford scored an unbeaten 76 off 42 deliveries for West Indies, while Gudakesh Motie took three wickets for 33 runs with his spin bowling.
West Indies’ total of 196-6 was built around Rutherford’s half-century, which included seven sixes. The team lost both openers in the first seven deliveries but steadied with Shimron Hetmyer and Roston Chase before Rutherford joined Jason Holder. They shared a 61-run stand to take West Indies close to 200.
England made a strong start but lost Phil Salt in the fourth over. Leg-spinner Adil Rashid took two wickets, including that of Chase, while Motie produced a double strike to turn the match around for West Indies. The team slumped to 93-4 at the halfway stage before Brook’s dismissal by Motie.
In the second half, Sam Curran made a valiant 43 not out but lacked support from his teammates. England captain Harry Brook acknowledged that West Indies played outstanding cricket, saying “We thought it was a chaseable total, for sure, but it didn’t dew up as much as we expected and didn’t skid onto the bat.”
West Indies’ victory puts them at the top of Group C with their second successive win. The team will look to build on this success in their next match.
