US Suspends Aid Assistance to Somalia Government Over Alleged Seizure of Humanitarian Supplies

US Suspends Assistance to Somalia Amid Allegations of Aid Destruction

The US administration has announced that it is suspending all assistance to the government of Somalia, citing reports that officials destroyed a World Food Programme warehouse containing US-funded food aid. According to a social media post by the US State Department’s Under Secretary for Foreign Assistance, Humanitarian Affairs and Religious Freedom, Somali officials allegedly seized 76 metric tons of donor-funded food aid intended for vulnerable Somalis.

The Trump administration has stated that it has a zero-tolerance policy for waste, theft, and diversion of life-saving assistance. The suspension comes amid a recent trend under the Trump administration, which has taken steps to restrict Somali immigrants in the US and stepped up air strikes targeting armed groups in Somalia.

In December, President Trump made comments about the Somali community in the US, describing them as “garbage.” He also criticized Democratic representative Ilhan Omar, who arrived in the US as a child refugee. The White House Press Secretary has indicated that Trump could use denaturalisation as a tool to penalise Somali Americans involved in a fraud scandal.

The suspension of assistance is not clear how much aid will be affected, but it follows a dramatic scaling back of US humanitarian assistance since returning to the White House in 2025. A spokesperson for the US State Department stated that any resumption of assistance would depend on the Somali government taking accountability for its actions and taking remedial steps.

Somali officials have not yet responded to the allegations.
