US President Announces Military Intervention in Venezuela
President Donald Trump has announced that the US will take control of Venezuela, with some lawmakers praising his actions and others expressing concerns. The move comes after Trump criticized Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a “warmonger” and called for regime change.
Some Republican lawmakers have expressed support for Trump’s decision, including Senator Lindsey Graham, who wrote on social media that Trump should be praised for taking action to liberate Venezuela. Graham also referenced the US national security interest in addressing the country’s drug trafficking issues.
However, not all Republicans are supportive of the move. Former Congressman Matt Gaetz joked about the capture of Maduro, while Libertarian Senator Rand Paul expressed muted disapproval of Trump’s failure to seek lawmakers’ authorization for military action.
Republican Senator Mike Lee questioned the legality of the attack, stating that he looks forward to learning what might constitutionally justify it. Meanwhile, Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene was one of the few dissenting voices, criticizing the US government’s military aggression and foreign wars.
The situation in Venezuela remains fluid, with Trump’s administration taking control of the country. The move has drawn comparisons to previous regime change operations, which some have criticized as unnecessary and potentially destabilizing.
