US President Donald Trump Calls for Talks on Annexation of Greenland
In a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, US President Donald Trump announced his intention to engage in talks with Denmark regarding the annexation of Greenland. Trump stated that he does not intend to use force to acquire the island, but emphasized the importance of negotiations.
Trump claimed that the acquisition of Greenland is crucial to US national security and referred to it as a “giant mass of land” in the Arctic region. He also mentioned that Denmark must make a decision on whether to allow the US to take control of the island.
The US president stated that he was seeking immediate discussions with Denmark, adding that Denmark had a choice: either agree to the acquisition or face potential consequences. Trump emphasized the importance of a strong and secure America, stating that it would also mean a strong NATO.
Denmark’s chief analyst at the Europa think tank, Christine Nissen, noted that Trump’s statement about not using force could be seen as a possible de-escalation strategy by Denmark. She added that European countries, including Denmark, have been cautious in their approach to Trump over the Greenland issue and are now reassessing their strategies.
European leaders, including the UK, France, and Denmark, have united in defending Greenland’s status against US demands. The dispute has led to tensions between Europe and the US, with Trump earlier threatening tariffs on European countries if they do not comply.
