US President Donald Trump Invites Egyptian and Turkish Leaders to Join “Board of Peace” for Gaza Governance
A proposal from the White House has invited the leaders of Egypt and Turkey to join a newly established “Board of Peace” aimed at overseeing the temporary governance of Gaza. The board will be responsible for implementing a plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza, which was unveiled in October.
According to Turkish presidential communications director Burhanettin Duran, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan received an invitation from Trump to join the board as a founding member. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated that Egypt is reviewing a separate invitation from Trump for Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to participate.
The White House has announced several members of the board, including US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner. Trump will chair the board.
The plan proposes a Palestinian technocratic body to be overseen by the international board for a transitional period. The board’s establishment is part of Trump’s plan to end Israel’s war on Gaza.
Palestinians in Gaza have expressed concerns about the composition of the board, citing the involvement of individuals with ties to Israel and its government. Al Jazeera reported that many Palestinians are worried that the board members may prioritize “dominance and control” over justice, reconstruction, and self-determination for the Palestinian people.
The White House has not detailed the responsibilities of each board member. The names announced so far do not include any Palestinians. Additional members will be named in the coming weeks.
