US President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu differ on Iran policy goals

US and Israeli Leaders Agree on Iran Strategy, but Analysts Raise Concerns Over Diplomatic Intentions

In a recent meeting at the White House, US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu agreed to intensify economic pressure on Iran. The strategy involves imposing tariffs on nations conducting business with Iran, which could significantly impact China’s oil imports from the country.

According to reports, the two leaders have outlined a plan to restrict Iranian oil exports to China, with the goal of limiting the country’s ability to sell its crude oil globally. This move is seen as part of a broader effort to “maximum pressure” on Iran.

However, there are differing views on the ultimate goal of this strategy. Trump has expressed willingness to negotiate a deal, while Netanyahu has reportedly argued that any agreement would be futile. Analysts suggest that Netanyahu’s stance may be aimed at pushing the US towards military action against Iran.

Despite these tensions, diplomatic channels remain open. Oman hosted indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran earlier this month, and President Trump announced plans for new talks with Iranian officials in Geneva. US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are scheduled to meet Iranian officials on Tuesday as part of a second round of negotiations.

The proposed US deal includes suspending uranium enrichment for three to five years and removing 450kg of highly enriched uranium from the country. However, Netanyahu is pushing for broader conditions, including curbing Iran’s ballistic missile program and severing ties with regional proxies.

Experts warn that Israel’s insistence on these conditions may be a calculated move to ensure diplomacy fails. “Israel knows Iran will not accept these conditions,” said Mohannad Mustafa, an expert on Israeli affairs. “By placing them, Israel is saying its only option is war.”

Meanwhile, Palestinian leaders have expressed concerns that the focus on Iran serves as a smokescreen for Israel’s annexation policies in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The Israeli cabinet recently approved measures to expand illegal settlements, which could further complicate efforts towards a two-state solution.

The situation remains tense, with global attention focused on the potential for regional conflict.
