US Official Reveals Plan for Hamas Disarmament and Amnesty
A US official has confirmed that a disarmament plan for Hamas is in the works, accompanied by “some sort of amnesty” for the Palestinian group. The official made the statement during a background briefing on Monday, according to reports.
The US official stated that Hamas has agreed to disarm, and that this move will be followed by some form of amnesty. The official also mentioned that if Hamas fails to comply with the disarmament plan, they would have breached the deal.
The comment was made after the body of the last Israeli captive in Gaza was recovered, paving the way for the next phase of the Gaza ceasefire deal agreed upon in October. The US official’s statement has been seen as a significant step forward in the negotiations.
Hamas has welcomed the recovery of the remains of its captives, stating that it has fulfilled all its obligations under the ceasefire agreement. Israel has also confirmed the return of the remains and stated that it must now uphold its side of the deal without any delay.
The US plan for Gaza includes provisions for Hamas members to decommission their weapons in exchange for amnesty, as well as safe passage for those who wish to leave Gaza. The plan also calls for aid to flow freely into the enclave and the reopening of the Rafah border crossing with Egypt.
Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs Hakan Fidan met with Hamas officials on Monday to discuss the second phase of the ceasefire agreement and humanitarian conditions in Gaza.
