US Imposes Blockade on Iranian Ports
The United States has announced plans to begin a naval blockade of all Iranian ports at 14:00 GMT on Monday. The move follows an announcement by President Donald Trump, who stated that he would be imposing a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway through which approximately one-fifth of global crude oil supply passes.
The decision comes after talks for a long-term peace plan between the US and Iran ended without a deal on Saturday. The two countries had been engaged in discussions in Islamabad, Pakistan, just days prior to the announcement.
As part of the blockade, the US military will restrict access to all Iranian ports, effective immediately. This development has sparked concerns about potential disruptions to global oil supplies, leading to an increase in oil prices above $100 per barrel.
The move also comes amid heightened tensions between Israel and Lebanon, with ongoing attacks on Lebanese territory. The situation is further complicated by the US-Iran standoff, which appears to be escalating.
