Iran Responds to US-Israeli Attacks with Threats of Retaliation
At least 34 people have been killed in Iran following attacks by the United States and Israel on Tuesday. The attacks targeted various locations, including Sharif University in Tehran, a leading scientific institution, as well as residential areas.
According to reports, an air attack in Tehran’s Baharestan County killed 23 people, while five others were killed in a residential building in Qom city. Six additional fatalities were reported in Bandar-e Lengeh, southern Iran. The attacks also hit several other cities across the country, including Bandar Abbas, Ahvaz, and Isfahan.
US President Donald Trump had previously issued a threat to Iran, stating that it must fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz or face strikes on its power plants and bridges. In response, Iranian officials have warned of retaliatory attacks, saying they will respond “in kind” to any attacks on their infrastructure.
Iran’s Ministry of Science and Technology reported that at least 30 universities have been targeted since February 28. The country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has condemned Trump’s remarks as an “incitement to war crimes”. Iranian officials have also warned that the US has yet to understand the geography of power, which could lead to severe disruptions in global energy flows and international trade.
Meanwhile, Israel faced several missile attacks on Tuesday morning, with alarms going off in parts of the country. Rescue workers pulled two bodies from a building struck in Haifa, while two residents remained missing. Ambulance services reported several injuries, some serious, in over 20 locations across the country.
