US-Cuba Diplomatic Tensions Ebb and Flow
Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio has confirmed that Havana is engaged in communication with Washington, although no formal dialogue has yet taken place. De Cossio stated that the US government is aware of Cuba’s willingness to engage in a serious and meaningful conversation.
The exchange between the two countries has been ongoing, with diplomatic channels and embassies established. However, de Cossio clarified that these interactions do not constitute a formal dialogue. The Cuban diplomat also emphasized that certain topics are off-limits for discussion, including the country’s constitution, economic system, and socialist government.
US President Donald Trump has recently increased pressure on Havana, issuing executive orders and threats against the Cuban government. On Monday, Trump announced at the White House that Mexico would cease sending oil to Cuba, which could impact the country’s energy needs. De Cossio responded by stating that such actions would ultimately backfire, as they attempt to force other countries not to provide fuel to Cuba.
The US has imposed decades of sanctions on Cuba, but recent economic challenges and increased pressure from the Trump administration have heightened tensions. The situation remains fluid, with ongoing communication between Washington and Havana.
