US President Donald Trump Appoints Businessman Bill Pulte as Acting Director of National Intelligence
President Trump has announced on social media that businessman and federal housing regulator Bill Pulte will serve as acting director of national intelligence (DNI), effective immediately. Pulte will replace Tulsi Gabbard, who resigned last month after revealing her husband’s cancer diagnosis.
Pulte, 38, is a graduate of Northwestern University and has been the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) since March 2025. He is also the heir to his family’s residential development firm, PulteGroup, which was founded by his grandfather in the 1950s.
Pulte previously founded a private equity firm, Pulte Capital, and is involved in large-scale philanthropic activity. He has been a vocal supporter of President Trump and has made public accusations against several high-profile individuals, including New York Attorney General Letitia James and California’s US Senator Adam Schiff.
According to reports, officials have not brought charges against Schiff, who denies the allegations against him. Additionally, the Supreme Court is expected to rule in the coming weeks on a case involving Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, who was targeted by Pulte’s unsubstantiated accusations.
Pulte will oversee 18 intelligence departments, including the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the National Security Agency (NSA), which monitors foreign communications and helps defend the US against cyberattacks. As acting director of national intelligence, Pulte can serve in the role for up to 210 days without being confirmed by the Senate.
Pulte’s appointment has been met with criticism from some lawmakers, who have questioned his qualifications for the position. Senator Elizabeth Warren stated that Pulte had deleted 25,000 social media posts before Trump nominated him to serve as FHFA head in January 2025.
