UN rapporteurs family sues Trump administration over imposed sanctions

US Sanctions Albanese Family Sues Trump Administration

The family of United Nations human rights rapporteur Francesca Albanese has filed a lawsuit against the administration of US President Donald Trump, alleging that sanctions imposed on her are an attempt to punish her for criticizing Israeli actions. The lawsuit was filed by Albanese’s husband and child on Thursday.

Albanese, who has served as the special rapporteur for the West Bank and Gaza since 2022, has been monitoring human rights abuses against Palestinians in the region. In July, the Trump administration sanctioned her, citing “biased and malicious activities” against the US and Israel.

The lawsuit argues that the sanctions are an effort to stifle Albanese’s criticism of Israeli actions, which have resulted in significant loss of life among Palestinians. The UN Human Rights Council selected Albanese for the position of special rapporteur.

Albanese’s family claims that she is entitled to express her views on human rights issues under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. They argue that the sanctions are an attempt to punish her for exercising her right to free speech.

The Trump administration maintains that the sanctions against Albanese are “legal and appropriate”. The US Department of State has described the lawsuit as “baseless lawfare”.

Sanctions imposed on individuals by the US typically freeze their assets in the country and prevent others from doing business with them. Since taking office, President Trump has used sanctions to penalize several critics of Israeli and US actions.

The case highlights the ongoing debate over human rights issues in the Middle East, particularly regarding allegations of genocide against Palestinians. The UN Human Rights Council has recognized the need for investigation into these claims, while Israel and the US have disputed their validity.
