United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres made comments during a recent media briefing that have sparked attention. In his annual address as secretary-general, Guterres outlined priorities for the UN and warned about the erosion of international cooperation.
Guterres stated that the world body is prepared to assist member states in addressing pressing issues such as climate change, inequality, conflict, and the impact of technology companies. However, he emphasized that global problems cannot be solved by one power or entity alone.
During his address, Guterres appeared to reference US President Donald Trump’s administration and its efforts to reform the UN system. The secretary-general also mentioned China, noting that two powers would not be able to solve key problems by creating rival spheres of influence.
Guterres highlighted the importance of international law, citing concerns about treaties being undermined. He stated that multilateral institutions are facing challenges on multiple fronts. Despite these concerns, Guterres reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to promoting peace and sustainable peace rooted in international law.
The US administration has taken steps to reduce its involvement with certain aspects of the UN system, including imposing sanctions on a UN special rapporteur and threatening sanctions against negotiators involved in UN talks. These actions have drawn criticism from other world leaders, including Brazilian President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva, who accused Trump of wanting to create a new UN.
The US-led “Board of Peace” initiative has also been met with skepticism. While over two dozen countries have signed up as founding members, several major nations, including France, have declined invitations to join. Canada has also been excluded from the board.
