Turkish Football Federation Imposes Fines and Suspension on Amedspor FC
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has imposed a fine of 802,500 Turkish lira ($18,500) on Amedspor FC, a second-division team based in Diyarbakir. Additionally, the club’s president, Nahit Eren, has been suspended for 15 days from all football activities.
According to the TFF, the fine was issued due to “ideological propaganda” displayed by the club on its social media accounts. The specific incident involved a 20-second video featuring a woman having her hair braided set to a soundtrack with the Kurdish slogan “Jin, jiyan, azadi”, which translates to “Woman, life, freedom”.
The TFF stated that the club’s actions were deemed damaging to the reputation of football. Amedspor FC has denied any wrongdoing and has appealed against the decision.
The incident occurred amid a recent online trend where women have been braiding their hair as a symbol of solidarity with Syrian Kurds following a military offensive in northeastern Syria. The TFF’s decision has sparked controversy, with some questioning the organization’s stance on free speech and expression.
Amedspor FC is currently leading the second division and could be promoted to Turkey’s top-flight Super Lig for the first time in their history this year.
