US President Donald Trump’s Influence Tested in Midterm Elections
Four states and the District of Columbia held primary elections on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in the 2022 midterm elections. The outcome of these elections will determine control of Congress for the final two years of Trump’s second term.
In the Senate race, Republican Mike Collins emerged as the winner, advancing to face Senator Jon Ossoff in November. Collins, a second-term congressman and self-described “MAGA warrior,” ran on a platform that echoed Trump’s false claims about his 2020 election loss in Georgia being rigged. Ossoff, who has made Trump a focal point of his campaign, will seek re-election.
In the gubernatorial race, healthcare tycoon Rick Jackson outpaced Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones after spending approximately $100 million of his own money on the campaign. Jackson will face Democratic nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms in November. Notably, President Trump did not attend any Republican events or make public appearances in Georgia, a departure from previous primary nights when candidates often paid tribute to their party’s leader.
The president congratulated Jackson on social media, stating that he “very successfully campaigned on being ‘TRUMP,’ and won.” This mixed result for Trump comes after most of his preferred candidates have prevailed in primaries this spring. The outcome of the midterm elections will be closely watched, with Oklahoma set to hold a key test in August when Trump’s pick for governor faces a Republican primary runoff.
