Trump and Xi Jinping Discuss Diplomatic Relations in Phone Call
February 6, 2026 • Al Jazeera
US President Donald Trump described his phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping as “excellent” on Wednesday, stating that the two countries are on friendly terms. Trump claimed that China had promised to increase soybean imports from the US, but this was not confirmed by Beijing.
During the call, Trump and Xi discussed a range of issues, including a planned trip by the US president to Beijing later this year. However, there was no mention of the visit in Chinese state media reports on the call.
Xi told Trump that he is willing to work with him to maintain China-US relations, but analysts say that underlying strategic competition between the two countries remains a challenge. The relationship between the US and China has been complex, with tensions rising over trade and security issues.
China’s government stated that the most important issue discussed during the call was Taiwan, which Beijing views as part of its own territory. Xi warned Trump to handle any weapons sales to Taiwan with “prudence” and reiterated that Taiwan is part of China’s territory.
The US has a long-standing commitment to supporting Taiwan, but Trump has taken a more pragmatic approach, focusing on making deals rather than prioritizing support for the island. The two countries are set to host major economic summits in November and December, respectively, which may provide further insight into their relations.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump stated that he is looking forward to his visit to Beijing later this year. However, the details of the trip have not been confirmed.
