Russia launched an attack on Ukraine overnight, using an Iskander-M ballistic missile and 146 drones. According to Ukraine’s air force, 103 of the drones were neutralized by air defenses.
The attacks occurred in various locations across Ukraine, including the Kharkiv region, where a passenger train was hit by a drone, resulting in at least five fatalities and several injuries. In addition, a Russian drone attack on port infrastructure in Odesa’s southern region injured three people.
In Kyiv, a 17-storey residential building was damaged after being hit by an Iskander-M ballistic missile, causing minor damage to the roof and windows on upper floors. Several buildings in Kyiv remain without power due to earlier attacks on Ukraine’s energy grid.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack in Kharkiv as “terrorism” and urged allies to step up pressure on Russia to end the war. He also stated that the Russian drone strike on a civilian train would be viewed as terrorism in any country.
The attacks come after recent negotiations between Russian and Ukrainian negotiators in the United Arab Emirates, which are expected to resume on February 1. Ukraine is seeking strong security guarantees from partners, including the US, in the event of a peace deal that would prevent Russia from attacking again.
Local authorities reported two additional fatalities in Kyiv’s Bilohorodska community and central Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region due to drone attacks.
