Russian Forces Launch Attacks in Eastern Ukraine, Killing at Least Seven People
A series of attacks by Russian forces in eastern Ukraine have resulted in significant loss of life and damage to infrastructure. According to Donetsk Governor Vadym Filashkin, Russian forces shelled the city of Druzhkivka on Wednesday morning, killing at least seven people and injuring 15 others. The attack targeted a crowded market during a typically busy time.
Separately, Russian military dropped two aerial bombs on the city, causing damage to several homes and buildings. Filashkin also reported that advancing Russian forces are seeking to capture Druzhkivka.
The attacks occurred as part of ongoing negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian officials in Abu Dhabi, facilitated by the United States. However, Ukrainian officials have expressed frustration with Russia’s continued attacks on its energy facilities, despite a one-week pledge to cease such actions.
In addition to Druzhkivka, Russian strikes also targeted the central Dnipropetrovsk region, killing a 68-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man in a residential area. The southern city of Odesa was also affected, with damage reported to around 20 residential buildings.
Local officials have confirmed that Russia’s military has seized control of several eastern settlements, including Staroukrainka and Stepanivka. European Commission spokesperson Anitta Hipper has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of misusing negotiations to continue attacks on Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure.
