Libyan Leader’s Son Saif al-Islam Found Dead in Western City
Saif al-Islam, the son of former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, has been confirmed dead in the western city of Zintan. The 53-year-old was last seen alive in 2021 and had been based in Zintan since 2011.
According to figures close to him, Saif al-Islam’s death was confirmed on Tuesday, although the exact circumstances are still unclear. He had been a prominent figure in Libyan politics before the 2011 uprising, and his father’s rule was marked by allegations of torture and extreme violence against opponents.
In March 2011, NATO began bombing Libya after the UN authorized “all necessary measures” to protect civilians from Gaddafi’s forces. Saif al-Islam had announced that his father was willing to hold elections and step down if he did not win them, but NATO rejected the offer.
Following long negotiations with the International Criminal Court (ICC), Libyan officials were granted authority to try Saif al-Islam in Libya for war crimes committed during the 2011 uprising. He appeared via videolink in a Tripoli court in 2014 and was sentenced to death in absentia.
Saif al-Islam was released by a militia in Zintan in 2017 as part of an amnesty, but he did not re-emerge publicly for years. In recent years, he had made public appearances, including a rare interview with The New York Times in July 2021, and filing to run for the Libyan presidency.
Saif al-Islam received a PhD from the London School of Economics in 2008 and was prominent in his calls for political reform. He presented a progressive face to the oppressive Libyan government and had been active in efforts to repair Libya’s relations with the West between 2000 and the start of the 2011 uprising.
The circumstances surrounding Saif al-Islam’s death are still unclear, but he is now confirmed dead.
