In a surprising turn of events, top-ranked tennis player Aryna Sabalenka suffered a quarterfinal defeat to Russian player Diana Shnaider at Roland-Garros on Wednesday. The match saw Sabalenka, the world number one, fall behind in the first set and struggle with unforced errors throughout the contest.

Shnaider, the 25th seed, overcame her nerves to secure a 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 victory, advancing to the semifinals. In her post-match interview, Shnaider expressed her emotions, stating that she was “super happy” and attributed her success to adjusting to Sabalenka’s game in the first set.

Sabalenka, who had led by a set and double break, made 57 unforced errors throughout the match. Despite being the only Grand Slam champion left in either the men’s or women’s singles draws at Roland-Garros, she was unable to capitalize on her advantage.

Shnaider will face Polish qualifier Maja Chwalinska in the semifinals on Thursday, with Marta Kostyuk or Mirra Andreeva awaiting the winner in Sunday’s final. The Russian player acknowledged that she had nerves during the match but managed to compose herself and finish strong.
