Over 200 reported dead in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo mine disaster

Collapse at Rubaya Coltan Mine in Democratic Republic of Congo Results in Multiple Fatalities

A landslide at the Rubaya coltan mine in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo has resulted in an estimated 200 or more fatalities, according to reports from local authorities. The mine, which supplies approximately 15% of the world’s coltan used in advanced electronics, collapsed on Wednesday.

The incident occurred in North Kivu province, approximately 60km northwest of Goma city, the provincial capital. Local officials have confirmed that over 200 people were affected by the collapse, including miners, children, and market women. Some individuals were rescued just in time, while others sustained serious injuries.

According to reports, the mine has been under control of the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group since 2024. The group’s involvement in the mine has raised concerns among rights groups, who have expressed worries about working conditions and safety protocols at the site.

The incident occurred during the rainy season, when the ground is particularly fragile. Local artisanal miner Franck Bolingo stated that people were believed to still be trapped inside the mine after the landslide. The exact number of casualties remains unclear, with local officials and international organizations continuing to assess the situation.

Rubaya produces a significant portion of the world’s coltan, which is processed into tantalum for use in various industries, including mobile phones, computers, aerospace components, and gas turbines.
