Nigerian President Tinubu to meet with British royal family during UK visit

King Charles III Welcomes Nigerian President Bola Tinubu at Windsor Castle

The UK’s King Charles III has hosted Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for a two-day state visit to Windsor Castle, marking the first high-level visit from an African leader in nearly four decades. The event was attended by over 1,000 soldiers and featured various cultural and diplomatic exchanges between the two nations.

Trade between the UK and Nigeria is at a record high, with Charles using the visit to highlight the countries’ strong commercial ties. Nigerian companies, including banks, have been expanding operations in the UK, creating hundreds of jobs and strengthening the country’s position as a global hub for African business.

The visit has been described as “historic” by London officials, who noted that it reflects a shared commitment to advancing trade and diplomatic relations between the two nations. The Nigerian presidency stated that the visit signals a “renewed chapter” in bilateral relations.

During the visit, King Charles and Queen Camilla greeted Tinubu and his wife, as well as heir-to-the-throne Prince William and his wife Catherine. The party then proceeded to Windsor Castle, where they were treated to a display of artillery fire and the waving of both Nigerian and Union Jack flags.

A state banquet took place on Wednesday evening, followed by meetings with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Nigerian community abroad. However, the traditional meeting between the visiting head of state and the British opposition has been noticeably absent from the official schedule.
