Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal Expected to Play in Spains World Cup Opener

Spanish National Team Coach Luis de la Fuente has confirmed that forwards Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are expected to recover from their hamstring injuries in time for the World Cup opener against Cape Verde on June 15.

Yamal and Williams both missed the end of the club season due to injury, but were included in Spain’s World Cup squad despite being unavailable for the final stages. De la Fuente stated that the players are “progressing as expected” and will not be involved in Thursday’s friendly against Iraq.

De la Fuente expressed confidence in the team’s preparation program, which includes continued training with their clubs. He noted that the players are improving daily and are on track to be fit for the World Cup.

Spain is one of the teams favored to perform well at the tournament, alongside other top contenders. De la Fuente emphasized that this year’s World Cup will be historic due to the large number of teams with realistic prospects of winning.

Following their match against Cape Verde, Spain will face Saudi Arabia on June 21 in Atlanta before concluding their group stage campaign against Uruguay on June 27. The FIFA World Cup is set to begin on June 11.
