South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem to Testify Before Congress for First Time Since Immigration Surge

Governor Kristi Noem of South Dakota is set to appear before Congress for the first time since a significant increase in immigration in Minnesota. The hearing, which will be held at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), marks Noem’s first appearance before Congress since the surge.

Noem has been under scrutiny over her administration’s handling of the immigration crisis, particularly with regards to the state’s efforts to address the issue. In 2022, South Dakota spent $220 million on advertising campaigns aimed at boosting “your name recognition,” which some have criticized as a misguided attempt to capitalize on the crisis.

The hearing is also expected to touch on Noem’s testimony regarding agency oversight and her administration’s response to the immigration surge. Senator Chuck Grassley has expressed concerns about the handling of the issue, stating that “mistakes were made” during the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown.

Noem will be testifying at a Senate hearing today, which is also coinciding with primary elections in several states, including Texas, North Carolina, and Arkansas.
