US-Iran Truce at Risk Amid Israeli Strikes in Lebanon
A series of overnight air strikes by Israel has killed at least seven people and wounded several others in southern Lebanon, according to reports from the Lebanese National News Agency. The attacks also damaged a town and artillery shelling was reported in another area.
Separately, four Lebanese soldiers were confirmed dead in Israeli strikes on Wednesday, as stated by the Lebanese army. Israeli forces claimed responsibility for the killing of Ali Yusuf Harshi, a close aide to Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem.
Hezbollah has not commented on the claim. The Israeli military also targeted crossings over the Litani River and what it described as Hezbollah infrastructure.
The US-Iran ceasefire agreement announced earlier this week appears to be at risk, with ongoing strikes by Israel continuing despite the deal. Al Jazeera reported that Israel claims to have an understanding with the US administration to continue bombarding Hezbollah until it is disarmed.
Hezbollah has been involved in the conflict since entering the war in retaliation for the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. The group has launched attacks across the border and prevented the Israeli army from occupying territory in southern Lebanon.
According to reports, 203 people were killed on Wednesday, with more than 1,000 wounded in Israeli attacks across Lebanon. Lebanese Prime Minister declared a national day of mourning on Thursday, ordering public offices to close and flags to be lowered in tribute.
The US has backed Israel’s position that Lebanon falls outside the scope of the ceasefire, which has further eroded confidence in the deal. Iranian officials have warned that continued attacks in Lebanon undermine the basis for negotiations.
