UFC Freedom 250 Event Results in Upset Victory for Gaethje
Justin Gaethje has won the lightweight UFC championship at the UFC Freedom 250 event, held on the White House lawn in Washington, D.C. The event was part of President Donald Trump’s celebrations of the United States’ 250th anniversary and took place on his 80th birthday.
Gaethje defeated Ilia Topuria (17-1) via technical knockout in the fourth round after a thrilling first two rounds. Topuria initially led the fight, but Gaethje landed a decisive right hand followed by a flurry of jabs that left Topuria’s face swollen and bloodied. The Spaniard appeared to be struggling with vision issues and was checked by a doctor before continuing through the fourth round.
Gaethje stated in his post-fight interview, “I knew I was going to have to get through the first round. His skills are unmatched when he’s fresh.” He attributed his victory to his durability, tenacity, and heart.
The event also featured other notable performances, including Ciryl Gane’s dominant win over Alex Pereira in the co-main event, which saw Gane score a stunning second-round knockout to become the interim UFC heavyweight champion. Sean O’Malley backed up his status as one of the most popular American mixed martial artists with a walk-off knockout victory over Aiemann Zahabi.
Josh Hokit continued his rise through the heavyweight division with a dominant performance against Derrick Lewis, finishing him with an extended combination of punches in the second round. Mauricio Ruffy also registered a statement performance, stopping Michael Chandler with a stunning roundhouse kick and subsequent finishing blows.
Bo Nickal earned his second straight victory with a vicious knockout win over Kyle Daukaus, while Diego Lopes knocked out Steve Garcia with an explosive combination of punches in the second round.
