Mark Zuckerberg disputes claims of social medias negative impact on youth

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Testifies in Landmark Trial Over Instagram’s Impact on Young Users

In a Los Angeles court, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified as part of a trial examining the impact of Instagram on the mental health of its young users. The case centers around KGM, who alleges that using YouTube and Instagram during her childhood led to suicidal thoughts and depression.

During his testimony, Zuckerberg pushed back on allegations made by Mark Lanier, the lawyer representing KGM. Lanier had shown emails from 2014 and 2015 in which Zuckerberg discussed aims to increase time spent on the app by double-digit percentage points. Zuckerberg stated that he strongly disagreed with this characterization of his statements.

The trial is significant as it may determine whether Meta is liable for damages if it loses the case. The outcome could also impact Big Tech’s defenses against claims of user harm, potentially eroding the notion that liability lies with the user and not the platform.

TikTok and Snap had previously reached settlements in similar cases, while Google has not been named as a defendant in this particular trial. Meta has denied KGM’s allegations, stating that it is confident in its evidence showing a commitment to supporting young people.

Zuckerberg’s testimony follows Adam Mosseri, the head of Instagram, who appeared in court last week. He stated that he was unaware of an internal study suggesting no link between parental supervision and teens’ social media use. The trial has received attention from families, school districts, and states around the US, with roughly 1,600 lawsuits filed against various social media giants.

The jury’s decisions will provide guidance for handling remaining cases, according to Tre Lovell, a Los Angeles-based media law and entertainment lawyer.
