Meanwhile, United defender Lisandro Martinez praised his team for heeding Carrick’s call to utilize the energy of the fans, saying they showed who they were on the pitch.

Carrick congratulated his players after the final whistle, with Alex Ferguson, a managerial great, also in attendance at Old Trafford.
