Guinea’s Presidential Election Results Announced
Provisional results from Guinea’s presidential election have confirmed Mamady Doumbouya as the winner, with 86.72 percent of the vote. The Supreme Court has eight days to validate the results in case of any challenges.
Doumbouya, a 41-year-old former special forces commander, faced eight rivals for the presidency. However, main opposition leaders were barred from running and had urged a boycott of the vote.
The election took place on December 28, with Doumbouya’s victory securing an absolute majority that allows him to avoid a runoff. The Supreme Court will review the results over the next eight days.
Doumbouya seized power in 2021, ousting then-President Alpha Conde who had been in office since 2010. This event was part of a series of nine coups that have reshaped politics in West and Central Africa since 2020.
The election results mark a significant development in Guinea’s transition to civilian governance after a military takeover nearly five years ago.
