Lactalis Recalls Infant Formula Batches Over Toxin Concerns
French dairy product giant Lactalis has issued a voluntary recall of six batches of Picot infant milk in France and over a dozen other countries due to the presence of cereulide, a toxin that can cause diarrhoea and vomiting. The company announced the move on Wednesday, following similar recalls by Swiss dairy corporation Nestle in almost 60 countries since the beginning of the month.
The recall affects Australia, Chile, China, Colombia, the Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Spain, Madagascar, Mexico, Uzbekistan, Peru, Georgia, Greece, Kuwait, the Czech Republic, and Taiwan. According to Lactalis, the toxin was detected in an ingredient supplied by a supplier, and the company is taking steps to rectify the situation.
Lactalis stated that French authorities had not reported any claims or incidents related to the consumption of these products. The company emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of its products.
This recall follows similar actions taken by Nestle, which has issued recalls in several countries since January due to potential cereulide contamination. In Singapore, authorities recently recalled batches of Danone’s Dumex baby formula and Nestle’s NAN HA1 SupremePro after detecting cereulide.
In 2018, Lactalis was involved in a major scandal surrounding a salmonella outbreak that led to the recall of 12 million tins of baby formula from over 80 countries.
