Italian authorities clarify ICEs non-police role at Winter Olympics

Italian Interior Minister Clarifies ICE Presence at Winter Olympics

Italy’s interior minister, Matteo Piantedosi, has addressed concerns about the presence of agents from the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency during the upcoming Milan-Cortina Winter Games. In a statement to the Italian Parliament on Wednesday, Piantedosi confirmed that ICE will operate within US diplomatic missions only, with no operational role on national territory.

Piantedosi stated that the controversy surrounding the deployment of ICE agents was “completely unfounded” and clarified that security and public order are ensured exclusively by Italy’s police forces. He added that during the games, ICE members will be engaged in analysis and information exchange with Italian authorities.

The minister emphasized that Italy has entered into a legally binding international agreement to host the Winter Olympics, which includes cooperation with US agencies such as ICE. Piantedosi also noted that ICE’s operations in Italy are separate from the immigration crackdown ordered by US President Donald Trump.

In response to concerns raised by Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala, Piantedosi stated that the Italian government will not see any activities on national territory that resemble those of ICE in the US. He aimed to reassure the public and dispel misconceptions about the agency’s role during the games.
