Israels proposed Gaza camp plan sparks international condemnation and outrage

Israel Unveils Large Facility at Rafah Crossing with Facial Recognition Technology

A large facility is being constructed at the Rafah crossing in Gaza, equipped with facial recognition technology and ID checks. The project, described as a “big, organised camp” by retired Israeli General Amir Avivi, aims to entrench Israel’s military control and presence in the region.

According to satellite imagery captured on December 2 through Monday, extensive clearing operations have taken place in western Rafah, covering an area of approximately 1.3 square kilometers. The cleared zone is located adjacent to two Israeli military posts, suggesting the new facility will be under direct military supervision.

The facility’s design and purpose are being questioned by analysts, who describe it as a “human-sorting mechanism reminiscent of Nazi-era selection points.” Wissam Afifa, a Gaza-based political analyst, stated that the facility is intended to deter Palestinians from returning to Gaza, with strict Israeli conditions in place for those seeking to cross.

The reopening of the Rafah crossing, scheduled for Thursday, comes with security control measures, including full “security screening” at checkpoints. The use of facial recognition technology has raised concerns about the potential risks and humiliation faced by Palestinians attempting to return home.

Israel’s military presence in Gaza is already significant, with forces occupying approximately 70% of the territory. The construction of this facility is seen as part of a larger effort to re-engineer Gaza’s geography and demography, reinforcing Israel’s permanent foothold in the region.
