Israels intentions and goals in Somaliland remain unclear to international observers

Israel Recognizes Somaliland as Independent State

In a move announced late last year, Israel has recognized Somaliland as an independent state. The decision was met with criticism from Somalia and condemnation across Africa and the Middle East.

The Houthis, leaders of Yemen, have expressed concerns over the recognition, describing it as a “hostile stance” and warning that any Israeli presence in Somaliland would be treated as a military target. This concern was reinforced when Israel’s foreign minister visited Somaliland earlier this month, including the strategic port city of Berbera in his itinerary.

Somaliland officials have indicated they are open to the possibility of Israeli military presence in the territory, which would place Israel directly across the Gulf of Aden from the Houthis. This has validated the group’s concerns and raised tensions in the region.

Israel’s recognition of Somaliland is part of a broader shift in its policy towards cultivating ties with alternative actors, following prolonged conflicts with Iran and its regional allies. The timing of the announcement reflects Israel’s growing concern about the threat posed by the Houthis in the southern Red Sea region.

The strategic port city of Berbera has been historically significant, hosting various international powers including the Ottomans, Soviets, United States, and UAE. Its location along one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes makes it a key point of interest for Israel.

An assessment published by Israel’s Institute for National Security Studies noted that Somaliland’s territory could serve as a forward base for multiple missions, including intelligence monitoring and logistical support for Yemen’s legitimate government. However, Israeli officials have acknowledged that the Houthis remain nearly undetererrable, prompting calls for a total overhaul of Israel’s military and security doctrines.

The decision to recognize Somaliland has been seen by some analysts as a strategic move by Israel to counter the threat posed by the Houthis in the region.
