Israel Faces Uncertainty Over Future Security and Sustainability
Analysts and observers within Israel and its diaspora community have expressed concerns about the country’s future stability and sustainability. If current trends continue, Israel may become diminished and no longer the secure regional hegemon it once was.
Several factors contribute to this assessment, including rising levels of political polarization, loss of investor confidence at home and abroad, and demographic changes. Political economist Shir Hever notes that the Israeli state is facing an existential threat due to internal divisions.
Hever explains that the country’s current trajectory may lead to a collapse of its existing form, similar to the transformation of apartheid South Africa after 1994 or East Germany following unification in 1990. The focus is not on Israel’s treatment of Palestinians but rather on the internal divisions within the country.
A significant push factor for secular Israelis leaving the country is the deepening political polarization, exacerbated by war, judicial weakening, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s machinations. This has led to a growing divide between liberal Jewish secular groups, those advocating for a religious Jewish state, and those seeking equal rights for Jews and Palestinians.
Former National Economic Council head Eugene Kandel and Strategic Futures Institute director Ron Tzur have warned that Israel may not reach its 1948 centenary if it continues on the same path. They identify three main groupings: liberal Jewish secular groups, those advocating for a religious Jewish state, and those seeking equal rights for Jews and Palestinians.
Analysts agree that Israel cannot afford to decline and must maintain its core workforce of educated middle-class innovators, medical system, and military strength to sustain its expansion into Palestinian territory. However, current indicators suggest that these areas are facing challenges.
Leaders have long prioritized population growth as a strategic goal, but the country’s internal divisions may undermine this effort. The loss of secular Israelis, including entrepreneurs who contribute significantly to Israel’s tech industry, could impact revenue and investment needed to sustain the government’s expansionist aims.
