Israel Proceeds with West Bank Annexation Despite International Criticism
Israel announced earlier this month that it would proceed with de facto annexing the West Bank, a territory inhabited by over three million Palestinians. The move has been met with widespread international condemnation and criticism under international law.
The international community has long criticized Israel’s actions in the region, including its occupation of the West Bank since 1967. In recent years, several countries have expressed their opposition to Israel’s government, including Spain, Slovenia, the Netherlands, and the Republic of Ireland, which are boycotting Israeli goods and refusing to participate in the Eurovision song competition.
Additionally, a global campaign is underway to suspend Israel from both European UEFA and international FIFA football competitions. South Africa has also filed a case accusing Israel of genocide at the International Court of Justice.
Despite this international criticism, many Israelis appear to be indifferent to the country’s actions towards Palestinians. According to Orly Noy, editor of the Hebrew-language news site Local Call, “Most people don’t even know we’ve largely annexed the West Bank.” She notes that the media often frames opposition to Israel’s actions as anti-Semitic, rather than a critique of the government’s policies.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu remains a strong contender in upcoming elections, with much of his opposition coming from domestic policy issues. The Israeli public’s perception of Palestinians is also reportedly limited, with some observers suggesting that extreme settler violence against them often goes unreported or is framed as justified.
Criticism of Israel’s government has largely been confined to smaller outlets on the left, while mainstream media channels have focused on reporting on the number of “terrorists” killed during conflicts. This has led to accusations that criticism of the government is being unfairly labeled as anti-Semitic.
