Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu departed for Washington, DC, on Tuesday, marking his sixth official visit with US President Donald Trump over the past year. During his trip, Netanyahu plans to present Trump with “principles” for negotiating with Iran.
According to Netanyahu, these principles are important not only for Israel but also for everyone who wants peace and security in the Middle East. He did not provide details about the specific principles he will share with Trump.
The visit comes days after Washington and Tehran concluded a round of nuclear talks in Oman. The US has moved military assets to the region to pressure Iran into an agreement, while Iran has stated that it will not be swayed by threats of war.
Iranian officials have expressed concerns about Netanyahu’s influence on US policy in the region. Top Iranian official Ali Larijani said that US officials must remain alert to the potential for Israel to derail diplomacy between Washington and Tehran.
Netanyahu has previously suggested that Iran should agree to full disarmament of heavy weapons, similar to Libya’s 2003 deal with the West. However, Iran has ruled out negotiations over its missile programme, which it views as a key deterrent against Israeli attacks.
The US and Israel are also pushing for Iran to end support to its network of allied non-state actors in the region. The talks will also focus on whether Iran would be allowed to enrich uranium domestically.
