Israel Unveils Plan for Thousands of Settlement Homes Near Jerusalem
The Israeli government has announced plans to construct 2,570 housing units near Jerusalem, sparking concerns among Palestinian activists that it would expand the city’s boundaries and take control of occupied West Bank land.
According to reports, the development plan is tied to Israel’s Geva Binyamin (Adam) settlement, located northeast of Jerusalem. However, the designated land is separated from Geva Binyamin by a highway and security wall. Instead, the new construction would be built closer to the Israeli settlement of Neve Yaakov in occupied East Jerusalem.
The Palestinian Authority’s Jerusalem governorate has denounced the plan as an attempt to conceal annexation efforts behind misleading planning titles. The Israeli rights organisation Peace Now has described it as a backhanded way of trying to annex the West Bank, stating that the new settlement would function as a neighbourhood of Jerusalem and be designated as such to conceal its true intentions.
The housing project is expected to require final approval from Israel’s Higher Planning Committee and is anticipated to move forward in the coming years. This development comes amid efforts by Israeli authorities to seize control of Palestinian land in the West Bank, which has been condemned by international bodies and Palestinian leaders.
According to recent reports, Israel’s security cabinet approved new measures expanding its security control over Palestinian-controlled parts of the West Bank and making it easier for settlers to purchase land there. The move was met with criticism from eight Muslim countries and the Palestinian Authority presidency, who accused Israel of attempting to impose a new legal reality and accelerate the displacement of Palestinians.
The construction of settlements in the West Bank is considered illegal under international law, with over 700,000 Israelis living in settlements and outposts across the territory. In contrast, approximately 3.3 million Palestinians reside in the area, where violent clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinians have intensified.
