Israel to Reopen Gazas Rafah Crossing This Sunday

Israeli authorities plan to reopen the Rafah border crossing on Sunday, marking nearly two years of closure. The crossing, which connects Gaza with Egypt, is expected to allow limited movement of people, according to the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT), a body overseeing civil affairs in the Palestinian territories.

The reopening is stipulated under the second phase of a US-brokered ceasefire deal aimed at halting the conflict between Hamas and Israel. The plan also includes the return of the remains of the last Israeli captive in Gaza, which was completed earlier this week.

Hamas has called for Israel to complete the implementation of all provisions of the ceasefire agreement, including the opening of the Rafah Crossing without restrictions. However, COGAT stated that exit from and entry into the Gaza Strip via the crossing will be permitted in coordination with Egypt, following prior security clearance by Israel, and under supervision of the European Union mission.

Residents who left Gaza during the conflict are expected to be allowed to return, provided they undergo prior security clearance by Israel. An additional screening and identification process will also be conducted at a designated corridor under Israeli army control.

The reopening of the Rafah Crossing is subject to certain conditions and restrictions, as outlined by COGAT. The exact timeframe for the opening has not been specified.
