Israel launches airstrikes on Gaza over 36 of past 40 days

US and Iran Agree on Two-Week Ceasefire Amid Ongoing Conflict

A two-week ceasefire has been agreed upon by the United States and Iran following 40 days of war, with talks set to begin in Islamabad, Pakistan on Saturday. The conflict began on February 28 when Israel and the US launched airstrikes on Iran.

Separately, Israel has continued to launch attacks on Lebanon, Gaza, and the occupied West Bank on a near-daily basis since the declaration of a “ceasefire” in the Gaza Strip six months ago. According to an analysis by Al Jazeera, Israel has attacked Gaza 36 out of the past 40 days.

In Gaza, Israeli attacks have resulted in at least 107 deaths and 342 injuries between February 28 and April 8. Since the “ceasefire,” Israeli attacks have killed at least 738 people and injured over 2,000. The conflict has also led to widespread shortages of food and medical supplies, with more than three-quarters of the population facing high levels of acute food insecurity.

In addition to Gaza, Israel launched a large-scale attack on Lebanon on Wednesday, killing at least 254 people and injuring 1,165. A journalist from Al Jazeera was also killed in Gaza in a targeted drone strike on the same day.

According to the US-brokered 20-point ceasefire plan for Gaza, 50 patients per day were supposed to be allowed out of the enclave for treatment, but only about 8 percent of the agreed number have been permitted to leave since February 28. Israel has also limited urgent food and medical supplies, exacerbating a humanitarian crisis.

The ceasefire agreement is set to begin on Saturday in Islamabad, Pakistan, with talks expected to focus on resolving the conflict between Israel and Iran.
